Instructional Sailing Program 2008

SYC Burgee
All classes are held at the SYC docks on Farm Pond and are open to SYC members and non-members. Hunter 146 sloops are used in all beginner and intermediate/advanced classes. 420’s are used in Advanced/420 classes. Parking is by permit only. Non-Sherborn residents participating in the program may get a special parking permit from the Town of Sherborn, valid only for the duration of the class. There will be a fee.

Youth Program
Open to youths 9 – 15 years of age. Classes run for two weeks, either morning or afternoon. See schedule below. A Family Day will be held on the last Saturday of each session. Families are invited to enjoy a picnic lunch, compliments of the SYC, and sail with their child to see what their child has learned.

All youths must be able to swim 25 yards and tread water for two minutes.

Swimming certificate or statement of ability will be required at registration.

Beginners Program — Youths are taught the fundamental principles of safe sailing. Written and practical tests must be passed in order to move to the next level. Each class is limited to 16. This program meets five days a week.

Intermediate / Advanced Program — Youths who have completed the Beginners Program or who can demonstrate basic sailing skills are encouraged to improve their skills. The curriculum will be tailored to accommodate both the recent Beginner’s graduate and the more advanced sailor. This class may/should be taken multiple times. Class limited to 16. Class is not held on Wednesdays, so that sailors can participate in Junior Racing.

Advanced / 420 Sailing — This class will focus mainly on racing skills and is for sailors who are at least 12 years old and have completed at least two years of Intermediate/Advanced sailing OR who can demonstrate advanced sailing skills. Applicants need Sailing Program Director’s approval. Class is limited to 10. Class is not held on Wednesdays, so that sailors can participate in Junior Racing.

Junior Racing will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 1 PM – 4 PM and is open to all SYC Juniors and Friends.

Adult Program

Mothers & Others
(Daytime Learn to Sail Program)

A sailing program for adults who are available during the day and who want to learn to sail or improve their sailing skills.
                    Spring: May 27 – June 17 (9:30 AM – 11:30 AM)
                    Fall: Sept. 2 – Sept. 26 (9:30 AM – 11:30 AM)
                    Cost: Select any five time slots for $185. Additional time slots available at $35 per slot.
Class size is 2-5 people.



Learn To Sail
(Adult Evening Program)

 A sailing program for adults who are available during the evenings and who want to learn to sail or improve their sailing
 skills. If you have never sailed, you must start on a Sunday, and then pick any four weeknights (Monday through
 Wednesday).

                    Dates: June 15 – July 30
                    Times: 3 PM – 5 PM – Sunday (Orientation)
6 PM – 8 PM – Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday
                    Cost: $185 for five evenings. Additional evenings available at $35 per night.
Class size is 2-5 people.


Registration Information

Youth Program
Priority status will be given to returning SYC members and 2007 students and their siblings. (SYC Membership Application must accompany the form.) Priority status applications will be accepted after April 1, 2008. All other applications will be accepted after April 15, 2008. Priority status applications received after April 15, 2008 will be merged with the general applications. Applications will be accepted only when received at the address below. Classes will be filled on a first come (with payment), first served basis, based on postmark. Notification of acceptance will be emailed within ten days of official receipt. A more detailed follow up letter will be sent in June.

Adult Program
Registration is open. There are no date restrictions. Notification of acceptance will be emailed within ten days of receipt.
